Turn River is another site that has a very balanced search profile -- it does very well in Google, excellent in Yahoo, very
well in MSN. It is not quite as balanced as Pokertips.org is, but perhaps even has a better profile, in that its Google
results send significantly more people, but it has better rankings in the other two.
I'd guess most people would be stunned to know Google has over 300,000 pages of Flopturnriver.com indexed. Yahoo
has 150,000 indexed. Large domains have all sorts of advantages search-wise over small ones. Most of these pages are forum
ones, but unlike most sites, Flopturnriver.com makes excellent SEO use of its forum pages.
Besides its way above average positive use of forum pages, Flop Turn River also makes use of subdomains better than just
about any other poker information site. This is one reason for the domain's very good results on MSN and Yahoo, since both
search engines have a immature attitude about subdomains. In reality, there is no practical difference (and thus no
reason to rank differently) poker-tools.site.com/ versus site.com/poker-tools/. But both MSN and Yahoo drool over
subdomains, essentially considering the exact match subdomain names are similar to the exact match of Poker.com. This of
course is ridiculous, since a jillion sites could make subdomains with names like poker-tools... and there is no reason that
such a site's section on poker tools is of any higher quality than a site.com/poker-tools/ section is. This is very poor
search engineering, but Flopturnriver.com reaps major benefits from it. The extremely bloated pages (many over 100k in
size) don't help the domain, but this is a very great example of how a site that seems kind of "small" to an
untrained eye is actually one of the highest traffic English-language poker information sites. |
