At less
than 600 pages, Poker Babes is the smallest website among the top
25 poker information sites. (Poker.com, Poker.net and Playwinningpoker.com are the next smallest at over 1000 pages.
The rest of the top 25 are over 10,000 pages, some with hundreds of thousands of pages.) Poker Babes is also the only
female-fronted site in the top 25.
When my friend Shirley Rosario told me in 2003
of her idea for a site built around profiles of successful tournament poker players, I admit I was a bit skeptical if only
because there was literally no such site in existence at the time. There are hundreds of sites now featuring player
profiles. If nothing else, Poker Babes shows that identifying a niche, getting there first, and doing it right can pay off
handsomely for quite some time.
Besides player profiles, the site has strategy articles, World Poker Tour reports, and years of
Shirley's journal entries from playing online and in
brick and mortar tournaments. The site went through something of a lull through 2006 when Shirley did battle with breast
cancer (chemotherapy doesn't lend itself to playing poker or writing, or HTML for that matter), but as of mid-2007 she is
cancer-free and recovered from chemo and radiation treatments.
I have part ownership of Poker Babes, but I'll pat us on the back to say that objectively making a small site rank in the
top 25 is quite an accomplishment. According to Quantcast, one-quarter of the sites visitors are regulars who account for
half of the domain's overall visits. Most of these regulars are journal readers, an area where small sites can compete on
level footing with larger ones, but what sets Poker Babes apart as a smaller site is traffic from its strong search presence.
(Like Poker News, Poker Listings, Play Winning Poker and Cards Chat among the top 25, Poker Babes real traffic numbers are
considerably higher than reflected on the top 25 charts due to its much higher than normal international traffic.)
