Poker.net
is one of the hardest of these profiles to write because it is the biggest mystery to me.
While the domain was first registered back in the 1990s, for many years it was used for nothing more than an email
poker tournament associated with RGP. It was not until Spring 2002 that a commercially profitable site was placed on
the URL. Looking back on it, what was everybody thinking. Given Poker.com being on the market in 2007 for in excess of
twenty-five million dollars, whatever price paid for Poker.net back in 2002 would have to look like a steal.
Of course, Poker.net is not an massively industry dominating site, particularly regarding search. It does quite well,
but given the keyword domain, it would seem like it should be more high profile than it is. I suppose that among all
the top 25 poker information sites, Poker.net has the least unique identity, while also correspondingly offering the
opportunity to be reinvented as something unlike anything else. It's rare that such a blank slate domain would
currently be doing as well as Poker.net does.
Inconsistent linking and a moribund forum certainly hold Poker.net back in the search world, as does a lack of a cohesive
focus. "All things poker" would be a good enough focus given the name of site, but a much more expansive domain
would be in order for that.
Looking to buy a poker domain with solid potential that you can put your personal stamp on? Here you go. |
