The
official website for the World Series of Poker, Worldseriesofpoker.com has a different mission than most other
information websites, although that mission has become a more standard one as of 2007.
Harrahs loves advertising income. No doubt about that. Since they place ads for male enhancement products on poker
tables it should come as no surprise that their website now bears Party Poker banner ads. (I believe the deal is
exclusive, but don't quote me on that.)
The Party banners appeared about the same time as "Powered by Bluff [Magazine]" appeared in the upper right corner
of the site. Partnering with Bluff likely will have positive and negatives implications. Bluff's overall reputation is
poor at best, but presumably they will put considerable effort into making the deal profitable for all concerned, since
if you screw up your maiden voyage, there are not a lot of second trips for the Titanic.
The site's blinding lack of focus and below average fundamental structure seem to ensure that the site will remain a
poker search one-trick pony -- it will dominate the important "world series of poker" search term and will get
a tremendous seasonal traffic spike during the Series, but besides that it does not appear to be a search traffic threat
for much else. Still, previous incarnations of the site were much weaker, so the new site looks to be a big step up
over what was there previously.
World Series of Poker is a trademark of Harrahs. |
